About Dental Bridges
If one or a few of your teeth have fallen out, it is not just a cosmetic issue — gaps in your teeth may cause your remaining teeth to move out of position. This may lead to extra tension when biting, pain when you chew, or even difficulty speaking. A bridge improves the appearance and health of your mouth by covering spaces with a false tooth supported by either your natural teeth, dental implants, or a combination of both. At Joanna Claustro DMD & Associates in Ashburn, VA, Dr. Claustro offers dental bridges with high-quality materials to help give you back your smile. If you have missing teeth, please schedule a consultative appointment with a member of our team to get more information about your treatment options with a custom bridge.

Am I A Candidate for Dental Bridges?
People with missing teeth don't merely have an appearance issue — gaps between the teeth may have a powerful impact on the health of your mouth. The fact is: your mouth is carefully balanced, and missing teeth can affect how well you can use it. Over time, a missing tooth can shift teeth, causing problems with your bite (underbite, overbite, crossbite) and atrophy of the gums and jawbone. To place a bridge, the surrounding teeth must be healthy enough to support the restoration, including sufficient density in the jawbone and gums. During your exam and consultation, Dr. Claustro will assess your gums and jaw to help you choose the best bridge type (traditional, cantilever, Maryland bonded, or resin bonded) and material (porcelain, ceramic, porcelain fused to metal, and metal).

How Do Dental Bridges Work?
Once your teeth are filed down and prepared for the procedure, Dr. Claustro will take digital images and dental impressions so your custom bridge can be created. A temporary bridge may be placed while your custom one is crafted. Once your bridge is ready, the needed areas of your mouth will be numbed with local anesthesia. Other anesthesia or sedation methods may be discussed for any dental anxieties or a strong gag reflex so you will be calm during the procedure. The bridge will either be cemented into place or connected to implants based on the support you and Dr. Claustro chose at your consultation. Dr. Claustro will carefully adjust the position of the bridge so it is comfortable and stable.
What can I expect after getting dental bridges?
After getting dental bridges, it is normal to experience some initial sensitivity, particularly when eating or drinking hot or cold items, as your mouth adjusts to the new restoration. Most patients are able to return to work and daily routines right away, though it may take a short period to feel fully comfortable with chewing and speaking. As you adapt, the bridge should begin to feel more natural and function like your own teeth. Proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits are essential to maintaining the longevity of your bridge, and over time, adjustments or replacements may be needed. Our team will provide clear instructions on how to care for your bridge and what to expect during the adjustment period, ensuring you feel confident in your smile moving forward.
